I'm Asian.
Now, Asia is a really big continent, but by "Asian", of course I'm only referring to countries like China, Korea, Japan, etc. So basically, East Asia.
It's funny how everyone always assumes that.
It's like you're making the rest of Asia feel left out </3
Favoritism is mean.
Anyway, Asian culture has a lot of stereotypes.
1. Asians are really good at life.
HA. If you've ever actually had a conversation with me, you know that this is completely false.
Let me just tell you some stupid things about me:
- I don't actually know the days of the week, and I woke up at 5:30 am on a Saturday. Twice. In one month.
- I dropped my phone into a bathtub. Normal people drop their phones into toilets. I walked by a bathtub that had water in it and IT JUST FELL IN.
- I stayed up until 2 am doing math homework aka "Let's just chat people leave it for lunch tomorrow"
- Did you know that I'm 15? Neither did I.
2. Asians are good at math.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHA REALLY?
YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT ABOUT ME?
I AM SO BAD AT MATH. IT'S LEGITIMATELY MY WORST SUBJECT.
I MAKE SO MANY CARELESS MISTAKES.
What's 6 divided by 2? 1/3
-6 points right there.
Yeah I know. I'm a genius.
3. Asians are really bad at socializing.
Sadly, this is true- at least for me.
I'm such an awkward person. You never want to be attempting small talk with me.
I have like multiple personalities: insane or completely silent.
I feel like people don't know what to think about me.
They see that really quiet girl who refused to say a word the whole morning turn into a super hyper being jumping around and shouting nonsense at her friends at lunch.
That's okay </3
My multiple personalities and I are fine on our own.
4. Asians work really hard.
Not really. It depends.
I am an overachiever, so this applies to me.
It's not really working hard though- more like "wow, this assignment is easy! let's keep working on it and making it pretty so I don't have to start math homework yet!"
Yay for procrastination :D
This is why I sleep so late x_x
5. Asians get straight A's
OF COURSE. WHO DOESN'T---
Yeah, just kidding.
I don't have straight A's anymore.
*cries
Why aren't 90s considered A's ;_;
Nah, I'm not crying. Math has taught me to stop caring about grades. If I still cared as much as I used to, I would've had at least ten mental breakdowns by now.
6. Asian parents are super strict.
My parents are actually pretty lenient for Asian parents. They don't really care that much about what I do.
Basically, as long as I'm not failing or getting in trouble, it's all good.
All that pressure for good grades really comes from myself ^.^"
Whoops. Unnecessary stress :D
7. Rice is the answer to life.
Yes. Yes it is. Anyone who thinks differently is wrong.
Rice is everything.
It's in my blood. I need it to survive.
8. All Asians play instruments (and by instruments, I mean piano and/or violin).
I've been playing piano since kindergarten, so yeah it's true.
Hey, it's a cool instrument, okay.
9. Asians have small eyes.
Unfortunately, yes. Even my dad makes fun of me.
It's really sad.
When I smile, I legitimately look like I'm blind.
10. Asians don't have a life.
Uh, I would like to bring up that one time I went outside earlier this month.
I would also like to say that I have a Google+, and that is where all the cool people are.
I even played Mr. Roche's probability game in Bio class.
I'm like...a gambler now.
I LIVE ON THE EDGE.
Okay, but in all seriousness, even though I may not be the best example, every group has many stories.
For example, some Asian people hate rice.
Well, I'm not friends with those people because I don't need that kind of negativity in my life.
The point is: they exist.
There are others are out there.
We need to keep an open mind to look past the stereotypes. The stereotypes only dictate a single view. A culture can have thousands of different stories from thousands of different people.
We just need to dig deep enough to find them.
